Polish Up a Home’s Exterior

( February 10, 2006) –   Decades-old properties are a tough sell to today’s buyers unless sellers update that 1970s and ’80s look, says Eric Tyson, co-author of House Selling for Dummies.

Tyson offers these suggestions for making a homely house more saleable:

* See the home as others do. Persuade the sellers to take a hard look at the house from the street. Help them compare its curb appeal to other homes in the area.

* Accentuate the positive in ads and other marketing materials. Point out the great floor plan, a desirable location, or excellent schools.

* Consider hiring a photographer. If the home shows poorly from the street, hire a photographer who will minimize that negative in ads.

* Give an unappealing exterior a new front door. It’s an inexpensive, but effective fix.
